The polio virus affects nerve call the sciatic nerve. This impudence innfervates the muscles of the hamstrings, leg and foot. So when this nerve is paralysed, adjectives the muscles it controls atrophy. This is because, for a muscle to not atrophy, it needs to receive tonic impulse from the nerve. If not, it will atrophy.
